Trauma and Counselling
Have you found yourself noticing difficult experiences can continue to have an impact on how we think, feel, react to others and how you see yourself? This may happen even years after your experience.
Trauma may affect you in different ways, such as; you may experience a single event that is overwhelming like a bereavement, accident, assault or abuse. You may have experienced a few traumatic events, or experienced several things that have been repeated over time. Something you experienced may have not even felt like ‘trauma’ at the time, even though you can recognise it is affecting how you think, feel, connect with others and is having an impact on your everyday life.
How you may feel during or after experiencing trauma:
-
You may feel numb, anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected or like you are on edge.
-
You may find it challenging to trust people.
-
Find relationships difficult.
-
Experience sleep issues.
-
Struggle with your self-confidence, self-worth and how you feel about yourself.
-
You may overreact or overthink in certain situations.
-
You may experience triggers from past events and feelings, relationships or memories.
How counselling may help you:
I offer a safe, supportive and confidential space where you would have the opportunity to explore your experiences at your own pace. You do not have to speak about everything straight away as you are in control and it is up to you with what you chose to share.
Working together, tailoring sessions to your needs and pace would encourage you to start understanding your experiences and how they are affecting you in the present. As you would learn a deeper understanding of your thoughts, emotions, triggers and behaviours. Exploring these and connecting with them would support you with using healthier coping strategies, feeing more grounded and connected with yourself and your surroundings.
My counselling approach is supported with compassion, empathy, respect and we would work together in a way that allows you to feel understood and valued without judgement. There would be no expectations that we should be working in a certain way as we all understand and process things differently.
If you feel you would like to speak about your experiences, how you feel and see if counselling could be right for you, please get in touch.
